The Global Positioning System, popularly known as GPS (the abbreviation / acronym of English Global Positioning System) is a system of satellite positioning American, sometimes incorrectly called the navigation system used for determining the position of a receptor on the surface Earth or in orbit. There are currently two systems effective satellite positioning, the American GPS and Russian Glonass, there are two systems in development, the European Galileo and Chinese Compass.

The GPS system was created and is controlled by the Department of Defense of the United States, DoD, for military use only. Currently it is open for civilian use free, requiring only a receiver capable of capturing the signal emitted by satellites.

The DoD provides two types of GPS services: Standard and Precision.

The system is divided into three parts: space, control and user. The space segment is composed of the constellation of satellites. The control segment is formed by the ground stations scattered around the world along the Equatorial Zone, responsible for monitoring the orbits of satellites, synchronization of atomic clocks onboard the satellites and update the data that the satellites broadcast almanac. The user segment consists of a receiver that captures the signals emitted by satellites. A GPS receiver (GPSR) decodes the transmission of the signal code and phase of multiple satellites and calculates its position based on these distances. The position is given by latitude, longitude and altitude, geodetic coordinates for the system WGS84.
